Square Card Reader

Hey Guys, iTechTalkz brings you the difference in between the Square Card Reader v1 and v2. Square introduced new, sleek, and thinner version of their card reader was introduced in Dec 2013. This new reader is built with custom-designed components for better performance, and accuracy.

Square was able to optimize for design and performance by creating custom components. The new Square Reader is built with custom parts (readhead, chip, audio plug) for better performance -- swipe accuracy, lifetime, and compatibility. The new sleek design of the new reader complements the design of our software. Like our UI, there is nothing extra. In fact, Square’s new reader is 45% thinner than its previous reader, and the thinnest mobile card reader on the market.

Standout features of the new Square Reader include:
  • A custom magnetic readhead and spring. Thinner and more accurate than the alternatives, the readhead parses redundant data from credit cards to ensure successful swipes
  • Custom electronics in a single chip. The reader is powered by the phone into which it is plugged, eliminating the need for a bulky battery and increasing life and reliability.
  • Improved communications protocols and a custom audio plug. The Square Reader is compatible with more devices than ever before.
  • The thinnest mobile card reader on the market.
The top package is for the Square v1 (Tri-fold) packaging. Bottom one is for the new Square reader v2.

Left Reader is v2 Square reader, while right one is older version. As you can see the newer version is 45% thinner and more elegant than the previous version.
